The Magician's Wife
Writer & Director: Elizabeth Brundage
Production: Oof and The Walrus ooofandthewalrus.com/

"You were just incredible on the shoot.  What a pleasure to know you.  Your work was extraordinary, even with the eye issue you were suffering with.  Thank you so much for your positive energy and for understanding what I was trying to get across in the film.  And thank you for bringing your fabulous dress and boots.  It truly brought Inez to life.  Maritza, I just can't thank you enough.  You are truly a star." elizbeth Brundage

Synopsis: A woman in her 20's, Hedda, edgy, uncertain, ambitious, is looking for a car to buy. On a bike ride one morning, she happens to notice a car up on a hill, covered with a cloth, with a for sale sign on it. She gets off her bike and walks up the long driveway to inquire, finding herself at the threshold of a mansion. When she rings the doorbell, she is invited inside by Flora, an aide, where she meets the owner of the estate, an older man, Señor Fuentes, a retired magician, who is grieving the loss of his wife. After an interview, he gives Hedda the keys to the car and tells her to take a drive around the neighborhood. The car had been his wife's and not just anyone can drive it; he has chosen her. Once inside the beautiful vintage BMW, Hedda discovers a pair of gloves in the glovebox. When she pulls them on, the ghost of the man's dead wife comes to life, sitting in the back seat, eager to go for a ride. Hedda and Inez share the drive together, and something more - an understanding of what it means to embrace the mysteries of our lives, the things we cannot possess or fully understand, the thing we call our soul that makes each one of us who we are - the very thing that makes us human.

Words from Director: As a writer/director, I have always loved the mystery that shimmers just beneath the surface of ordinary life. Questions of other dimensions, other possibilities of time and space, have always intrigued me. In this short film, I plan to explore these ideas gently, allowing the poetry of an ordinary day to challenge and inspire Hedda to see the world anew.

Elizabeth Brundage is the author of five novels, The Vanishing Point, All Things Cease to Appear, A Stranger Like You, Somebody Else’s Daughter, and The Doctor’s Wife. The Vanishing Point was a Harlan Coben Today Show Pick July 2021 and a WSJ best mystery of 2021. All Things Cease to Appear was a New York Times Editor’s Choice, a WSJ best mystery of 2016 and was the basis for the Netflix film Things Heard and Seen starring Amanda Seyfried and James Norton.

Great news! "The Magician's Wife" was nominated for best Mystical/Spiritual short at the Cannes World Film Festival! Congratulations!
